WorldView (free edition) was released on 20th October 2008, 309 days ago as version 1.0. Since then it was a fun, sometimes tough but overall an awesome ride! WorldView reached overall download chart position 1 in numerous AppStores like Germany, Switzerland and Romania. It was number 2 in Austria, Saudi Arabia, in the top 5 in Belgium, France, Greece, Luxembourg. WorldView was also one of the worldwide top 10 download apps of 2008 in category travel. But the biggest thing happened today:

The app

WorldView isn't a game, it isn't based on a hype topic like Twitter, nor is it a useless fun (fart) app. It is a nice app, a webcam viewer. But a great one! And it is free! (Hey, did I already mention there is also a Live edition ? *hint*)
The reason this app is free obviously is the root cause of reaching this massive amount of downloads. So most of the people (when looking at the reviews) just download it because it is free, they have no idea what the app is about, why it works the way it does, why it doesn't do things it doesn't. Well, for making it possible to reach this download number, I gladly accept all the reviews and say to everybody who downloaded it for whatever reason:

Some details

The US Store got 19% of the downloads, next are Germany (17%), Great Britain (15%), France (10%), Australia (5%), Canada (2%), Switzerland (5%), Spain (4%) and Japan (2%). Even though the US store is by magnitudes bigger than all others, it is only slightly in the lead.

Currently the avery download rate is slightly above 1000 downloads per day. The spikes you see in the above chart are caused by the launch late october last year and then by Apple featuring WorldView in the "New and Noteworthy" section of the AppStore in Germany, Great Britain and Australia. So if nothing unexpected happens again, the next million will take some more time ;-)

The future

There will be a version 2.0 sometime in the future of both WorldView editions, but right now adding more content to WorldView Live has priority. Version 2.0 is right now in experimental phase, doing some paper sketches, trying some development builds and such. The beta community is helping a lot, thanks to all of them.
