Since the AppStore reached 1 billion downloads this week, we wanted to take the opportunity to show you some stats about how the free edition of WorldView is doing since its launch on 20th October 2008.

The beginning

On christmas time last year we announced 300000 downloads of WorldView. That was already a big surprise to us. The app has been number 1 in the overall downloads charts in several countries like Germany, Switzerland and Romania and had Top 10 positions in lots of more countries like Austria, France, Belgium, Greece, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia and others! We were really blown away! By end of January the app has reached 450000 downloads showing an average of 150000 downloads per month.

The time after the launch

As you see in the chart, downloads had a huge peak right after launch and a smaller one during christmas time. After that it was very slowly going down from like 3000 downloads/day down to 1800 downloads/day. During all that time, and even in the beginning, there was nearly no press coverage done except a few articles in a few german iPhone blogs.

Featured effect

Then suddenly the app got featured in the iTunes AppStore by Apple for a week in several countries like Germany, Austria, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. What an effect his had!

The app moved up to position 4 in german and australian overall iTunes charts and position 5 in the british, New Zealand and austrian iTunes AppStore. So these countries were responsible for causing more than 18000 downloads/day! There was no effect in download numbers in any of the other countries.

844013 downloads until today

Only a week after getting featured the download numbers went down again to around 2000 per day. From the start until today this results in having 844013 downloads of the free edition of WorldView. This is impressive! Also of important note is, that the app never reached any top 100 overall download chart position in the biggest AppStore out there: the United States iTunes AppStore!

Country statistics

Knowing the full stats and just claiming the US is a little low compared to other countries is easy, but here is proof:
